English speaking tourists are often left amused and bemused by poor translations on public signs and informative literature. But Chinese officials are determined to eradicate the use of poor English grammar and vocabulary that they feel “damage the country’s image”.
Although China has attempted to root out poor translations in the past, notably as the country’s capital Beijing prepared to host the Olympic Games in 2008, previous efforts have had limited success.
But Chinese officials are keen to improve the country’s image and have recently taken special aim to wipe out any instances of “Chinglish” once and for all.
A new standard is due to come into force on 1st December 2017. A stronger emphasis will be placed on ensuring that any public service signs or marketing materials containing English translations are accurate, use socially acceptable vocabulary and are grammatically correct.
