Accutranslate does a lot of interpreting for football clubs and professional football players. Interpreting in any context demands accuracy, timeliness and discretion. In the football world the high levels of interest in footballers and their every move means that accurately translating what they say is even more important. If the footballers are indiscreet and criticise their team mates or manager, then that’s their problem – but sometimes it seems that listening reporters have deliberately taken their words out of context. It’s understandable that football clubs want to ensure that their players’ words are correctly translated.

Recently Achraf Lazaar, a Newcastle player on loan to Benevento, found a translation got him into trouble. The defender was speaking ahead of his debut on Sunday for and in the interview said his loan move to the Serie A club was ‘the end of a nightmare’. But he then complained that ‘the report came out badly’ and that ‘I said nothing bad, but things got changed in the article’.

Lazaar is not the first one to complain about being misquoted. Former Manchester United player Nemanja Vidic was quoted as saying: “In England, they say that Manchester is the city of rain. Its main attraction is considered to be the timetable at the railway station, where trains leave for other, less rainy cities.” The remarks were made in his native Serbia, but reported back in England. His employers hastily released a statement in which he denied he had said those words.  “I’d like to clarify that I did not make these particular remarks. I spoke about the difficulty I had settling in to life in Manchester, but that does not reflect how I feel now.” The need to clarify his words demonstrates that football clubs want to be sure players do not upset fans, and will correct mistranslations.
